Let us define Test Report

Test Report is a document that records data achieved from an evaluation experiment in an organized manner, it describes the environmental or operating conditions, and convey the comparison of test results with test objectives. This report is a principal and concise form of information transfer from the executor to the customer.

Why Test Reports are prepared?

Is it really necessary to prepare test reports? Answer is – “Yes”. In fact, here we have three reasons for preparing test reports:
  • Accurately prepared test report allows you, not only to analyse the current status of the project but also to maintain the quality of the product.
  • You stand a chance to take correctional measures if required.
  • The decision of whether the product is completely ready for the release or not can be taken by the help of this Test Report.
The Mandatory preconditions of creation of Test Report are Quality and Transparency. 

For whom the Test Reports are prepared?

While creation of a Test Report, You should have a complete understanding of, for whom the report is going to be created and who is going to read it. The Priorities of the Targeted audience will decide the information content of the report, they will different in structure as well as they will be specific to the group.

Three classifications of targeted audiences can be differentiated as:

Business users /Product owners

This is the group who have the authority of decision making at the end of testing. They also focus on the quality of the work done. They give preference to clearest and shortest format may be "Yes" or "No", which is more important for them. Visual presentation with the use of graphs, diagrams etc., overall opinion of experts on production of the product in the industrial environment and release of the product without detailing each and everything.

Product Managers

They give more importance on the implementation deadlines, meeting the deadlines in time frame, the accurate and pure results is the priority given. They are not interested in unnecessary technical detailing. The overall statistics of the phase which should consist of digital and comparative metrics is their area of concern.

Technical users (Test managers)

This category of audience like details. The detailed understanding of test progress, Causes of emergence of problems and ways to solve them. Construction of test processes with the description of methodologies and technologies to be followed is given more priority.

Final Test Report

This report gives a basic overview of the work done in the form of well-defined metrics and the advancement of the product. You will also need to provide an in- depth information regarding the status of the product which will include the number of unresolved defects, probability of the product being fully tested or any further test cycles will be needed to be considered, overall readiness of the product for release.

Intermediary Test Report: 

Test Reports shows the progress of your work which is not constant, its dynamic. To determine the state of the project they are compared in time intervals like Days, Weeks & Months. This comparison is demonstrated in the form of different metrics.

Based on the goals of the requirement the metrics are created for each project separately. They provide an easy and clear overall comparative representation of all the available projects and its give a quick overview.

Now let’s see how a Test Report Template looks like

  • It should contain all the Project Information. That should provide the title of your project, product name, and version in the test report.

  • Test ObjectiveHere you need to mention the objective of each and every stages of software testing process, that can be UI testing, functional testing, performance testing, integration testing etc. and describe in detailed manner in the test report.
  • Test SummaryFollowing are statutory to be mentioned in this section:
    • Total number of Test Cases Executed
    • Total number of passed Test Cases.
    • Total number of failed Test Cases.
    • Percentage of Passed Test Cases.
    • Percentage of Failed Test Cases.
    • Remarks.
  • Defects 
    • Total number of identified issues.
    • Defects statuses (open, closed, fixed etc.)
    • Number of issues by each status (open, closed, fixed etc.)
    • Priority and Severity classified defects.

Guidelines to be followed while using Test Report Template

  1. Provide your project details like project name, date, version at the specified place.
  2. Provide the Document details at its specified place.
  3. Can add, edit or delete the contents according to your needs after downloading the Template and saving it in your system. It is also highlighted in blue italics format where the content can be added.
  4. There are specific tables for every section, to make it easier for the user of the Template to fill in the details.
  5. Fill in the tables according to its row and column headings.
  6. Clearness: It’s very important for all the given data and information’s to be very understandable and clear. It should not create any ambiguity for the reader.
  7. Specification: Summarize the test result specification in a brief and precise manner. This put a good impact on the reader rather than essays.
  8. Standardization: The use of such standard templates for your test reports will make everything easier and convenient for the reader, to review test report. By this way, you will be able to maintain consistency between each and every test reports from all your projects.
  9. Details: It is inappropriate to give an abstract information to the reader into your test report. So, it is a good practice to describe all the testing activity in details which you have performed. As in this way reader will understand what you want to convey.
